Lorena Stove

The Lorena stove is a simple, hand-built woodstove that can be made with the most readily-available materials. It relies on simple concepts of heat preservation to maximize the amount of heat while minimizing the amount of firewood needed, making it ideal for poor areas that must rely on wood for fuel.

Our permaculture students made this stove as part of the Intensive Permaculture course in June of 2008 in a guided, hands-on practice in building with adobe. We first experimented with making bricks using only clay, sand and straw (classic cob mixture, without cement) - but the ambient humidity prevented them from drying at all, and after a week they were still completely fresh and too soft to move. We created a base using rocks, with sand pressed in between to keep them stable. On top of that, we molded the base by hand with the same mix we used for the cabin (2 parts clay, 2 parts sand, 1 part cement).

Next, we built the interior division, and we used a found concrete arc as the main opening.

After putting in the stovepipe and adding some artwork, the stove is almost finished - we just need to put in the burners!

Now that it´s built, we will need to make a few small fires inside to cure the stove and mend any cracks. Once that´s done, it´s ready to use!
