Housing Options

First of all, let us clarify that Mazatepec isn´t a hotel resort, it´s a small village where people still walk most places, live in close proximity to farm animals, and in general live quietly and humbly- so if you´re high maintenance this is probably not the place for you. That being said, we have a few different options for housing:

On-site camping: Our facilities are basic but include a composting toilet and clean springwater for bathing. Please bring your own camping equipment. Cost: $500 Mexican pesos

Student Cabin: Stay in a cabin specifically for students and volunteers. The cabin is unfurnished and has a lockable door. Cost: $1,000 Mexican pesos

Full Homestay (SUBJECT TO AVAILABILITY) Stay with one of our host families in the village and share in their life. This is the perfect option if you like the idea of full cultural exposure. Here you can enjoy a warm bed and have breakfast with the family. Cost: $2,800 Mexican pesos .

Housing (tent or cabin) is free for WWOOF volunteers - these prices are for the 15 day period of the intensive permaculture course. If you would like to come for a different amount of time, please contact us.

What to Bring

If you are harboring any stereotypes about the weather in Mexico being hot and dry, it would be in your best interest to COMPLETELY IGNORE them. Instead, CLICK HERE to read about the weather in Mazatepec.

For those of you who find it inconvenient to travel with bulky equipment, heavy sleeping bags or raingear, we do have some supplies available to rent on a weekly basis. If possible, please let us know what you will need ahead of time so we can better accommodate you.

If you are planning to come to the farm at ANY time of the year, you should bring...

Clothing for both warm and COLD weather (winter coat, scarf, wool hat, etc.)

RAINGEAR!! (Raincoat and pants, rubber boots, etc.)

Comfortable (and waterproof) hiking shoes

Extra socks

Sunblock

Fortunately, we don´t have a problem with mosquitoes or other nasty blood sucking insects in the Mazatepec area. However, we will be taking a couple day trips to areas where you will probably get bitten by mosquitoes. Personally, I don´t ever use insect repellant, but if you are sensitive (or worried about mosquito-borne illnesses) you may want to bring your favorite bug spray, specifically for those day trips.

Personal items you may want to bring include:

A sturdy water bottle

Flashlight

Biodegradable soap and shampoo

Notebook / Journal / Sketchbook

Books for leisure reading

Musical instrument**

**Please be aware that you are coming to a high-humidity environment! Humidity can cause damage to some instruments!

If you are camping or staying in the cabin, you will need to bring:

WARM sleeping bag and pillow

If you are camping, you will also need:

Waterproof tent with a FULL RAINFLY (one that completely covers the tent) and groundcover
